I still remain skeptical regarding the feasibility of this project and how it will all come together within a very short period of time. I admittedly am only getting my information second hand from council meetings and other blogs and draw my own conclusion from that information. I have a couple of important questions questions that no one has been able to definitively answer regarding this project.
Here are the questions regarding this project:
Lets assume the Ojibwa gets moved to Port Burwell and the $1.9 million grant money is spent during this process what happens if the museum is unable to raise the necessary funds for the project?
My understanding is the grant money needs to be spent the end of March 2011, it may be difficult to move the Ojibwa before the seaway closes by the end of December, the move would need to be delayed until the spring when the seaway opens. The earliest the Welland Canal has ever opened was March 20 this leaves a small window of opportunity to move the sub before the end of the month. What happens to the grant money if the move cannot commence until the beginning of April? Is the money gone at that point?
I keep hearing that the project will be self sustaining and a profitable venture, the museum says we can expect to have 100k visitors a year to the sub. How does the museum get to the numbers of 100k visitors per year? What studies have been done to determine this? Why does the H.M.C.S. Haida only get about 11k visitors at a cost of only $4 per visit being so close to Toronto? How will the Ojibwa be any different? Why will the Ojibwa get 10 times the visitors of the H.M.C.S. Haida?
Can the military museum start spending the grant money before any concrete plans are in place to move the Ojibwa? If the Ojibwa can't be moved until late March can the grant money be spent over the winter to build a cradle? If not how is the military museum affording the current expenses?
I remain skeptical because of these question. I again want to reiterate that I am not against the project however I do worry that $1.9 million of grant money could be squandered if this project does not work out. That $1.9 million could pay for a lot of important things in our community especially in these times of economic turmoil. If anyone has some answers to these questions please post a comment. I am not trying to be negative however I do think some of these questions ought to be addressed, I am a person that does not just accept trust me it will work, I need assurance and facts in order to convince me that the project will work. If this money was all private funding I would not even question this project, however when $1.9 million of tax payer money is on the line then I need to express myself and question the project. Prove to me the feasibility of this project to make me a believer.
